So I wanted to try my hand
at doing a musical number. Challenge myself to explore something different. The
goal being to tell a quick, simple story with appeal and entertaining
characters. I set my sandbox limits and gave myself a super short deadline.
With a only a rough idea in my mind, I did some
thumbnails—treating them like a visual version of the Post-It Splatter exercises
I’d done in Rusty Gray’s Memorable Animator workshop (highly recommend!) I took
earlier this year. The characters and basic story beats sprang from there,
prompting more thumbnails.
Picking and choosing different bits from my
thumbnails I did some rough boards which I then synced to the song. I’m a child
of the 70’s, which may explain my choice of Captain and Tennille’s Shop Around. But besides the obvious
nostalgia factor, I felt the song had great potential—it was perfect for what I
had in mind.

Around by clicking here.
