Sleeping Beauty

Sleeping Beauty has long been my all-time favorite Disney animated feature. It's a gorgeous looking film. The intricately detailed backgrounds and unique character designs make it feel like you are watching a living tapestry. Maleficent is an awesome villain--easily one of Disney's best. Her transformation into a dragon at the climax of the picture and the action that follows, accompanied by George Bruns' adaptation of Tchaikovsky's musical score, is a tour de force. That dragon is the coolest dragon I've ever seen on film.

The look of the film was designed by Disney's stable of talented artists. Among them were Marc Davis, Eyvind Earle, Ollie Johnston, Milton Kahl, and Frank Thomas. Their art inspired generations of artists--and will continue to do so for many generations to come.

Here is a small sampling of some of their work from Sleeping Beauty. Enjoy!
